About this place
The Habag palace stands at the start of Vase Stajića street, on the corner of what is now Trg galerija, and was completed in 1931 as the central building of the German community in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It held the offices of the Kulturbund and of the German agricultural credit cooperative Agraria, and a well known café called Habag occupied the ground floor. Sources disagree about who designed it: Serbian accounts credit the Vršac architect Viljem Rihard, while the German heritage project Danube Places names the architect Oskar Pakvor and the builder Philipp Schmidt, so the attribution should be treated as unsettled. Construction is usually dated from 1929 to 1931.
