About this place
The Marcibányi-Karácsonyi castle stands in the Kamenica park at Sremska Kamenica, on the right bank of the Danube across from Novi Sad. It was built in stages between 1797 and 1811 for the noble Marcibányi de Puho family, and was rebuilt and enlarged between 1834 and 1836 after the Karácsonyi family came into the estate. The building is classicist, with Doric columns, carved decoration and ornamental ironwork, and it is unusual among castles of its kind because its plan is not symmetrical. Castle and park together are protected as a spatial cultural and historical ensemble of great significance, and the building now holds a faculty of European legal and political studies, the Nikola Mirkov documentation centre and offices of the national hydrometeorological service.
