About this place
The postcard held here under the name Ženski dom carries a printed caption that reads Srpski učiteljski konvikt, the Serbian Teachers' Convict, and it is that building the photograph shows. The convict was organised in Novi Sad in 1890 by Arkadije Varađanin, the teacher who ran the Serbian Higher Girls' School in the town and who campaigned for the education of women. It was a boarding house rather than a school: pupils of secondary and trade schools, and the children of teachers who had come to Novi Sad to study, lodged and ate there free or at a large reduction. It was paid for by subscriptions and gifts collected from Serbian parishes across southern Hungary, and donations to it are recorded in the Novi Sad papers Zastava and Školski glasnik through the 1890s and 1900s. The caption is set in Cyrillic beside a Latin transliteration, the two-script form used in Yugoslavia between the wars, so the card was printed after 1918.
